What is a surf camp? My experience in a surf academy

Even though “surf camp” looks like a simple word, it has a deeper meaning than what everyone thinks. It goes beyond the word “camp” and that is how I saw it while I was there. It is mainly a summer camp where surfers from around the world go to sleep. These surfers’ expectations are to find a place where they can surf, meet new people who share this passion, and enjoy an environment that best suits their needs. Here I met people with whom I have a lifelong friendship now. My view about this sport completely changed once I went there. Additionally, I also had some awesome teachers that helped me improve my surfing skills.

Where can I find a surf camp in Spain?

In Spain you can surf in many places where there are many types of waves, but not all coasts have cozy places for the surfers. I’ve been all over the north coast and both Spanish archipelagos. Among them is San Sebastian, the place most recommended by my surfer friends (and me). More specifically, the San Sebastian Surf Camp. If you want to live a unique experience and have a special trip I also recommend the surf camp in Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. In these surf camps I personally improved my skills and level of surfing. Since you live with people who probably will have a higher surfing level than yours, they can advise you. There is also a special accommodation for surfers, which will make it easier for you to learn and be more comfortable. Furthermore, it’s very easy to store the boards and dry the wetsuits there. It is very common that most people think that this type of site is related only to surfing. However, when I was there I saw that there were many more activities offered: English classes, yoga and even skateboarding. If you get tired of surfing, these are very good alternatives to change scenery for a while.

The amazing surf camp mood

At the surf camp I stayed, the transportation was included although the beach was close by. The price of the surf camp also included the boards, the wax for the board and of course the wetsuit. As well as advice and recommendations about spots, depending on the age of the surfers or the surfer’s experience. That was something I really appreciated. Another aspect that I liked a lot was that even if you went alone to the surf camp, you never ended up surfing alone, since it’s dangerous. You always had either a friend or a monitor with you in order to feel more relaxed. On the other hand, since it is a mood that transmits freshness and a very pleasant atmosphere, there were many people who used it simply to spend a couple of nights relaxing, sleeping and breathing the ocean air. In the case of Spain, there are several options and places where you can go to enjoy big waves. Apart from the places already mentioned as San Sebastian and Lanzarote there are also big waves in: Canary Islands, Euskadi, Andalusia, Cantabria, among others, but not all of them offer the comfort of a surf camp.

Why should I go to a surfcamp?

There are many reasons for a surf lover to attend the surfcamp. For example, one of them is to meet a lot of people with the same passion and fun for this sport and thus increase your circle of people with whom you share this hobby. In addition, these surf camps usually provide you with information related to sea conditions such as tides and spots, ideal for those who do not know much about the area where they are going to surf and need some advice. Although you can look these previsions on internet, is is much safer to take a local surfers’ advice. On the other hand, if you want to take some lessons, they will take you to the beach and usually, they will rent their surfboards to you so you won’t have to carry yours wherever you go (unless you want to).

What do these lessons at the surf camp offer?

We have reached a very interesting point for all surf lovers: What do the lessons at the surfcamp offer? The most important thing is the personalised teaching, the attention dedicated to each person in order to improve all the techniques and tools related to this sport. -The classes are given by qualified instructors during an approximate time of 2 to 5 hours, depending on how much time you choose. -As it is a sport that requires special techniques, the classes are given in a personalized way. -At first, surfers who want to reinforce their knowledge receive a brief explanation of the techniques to be used in terms of board movements and everything that is convenient. This is sometimes explained in the sand to make it easier for beginners.

The Surf camp: A unique and unforgettable experience

Surfing is a sport strongly related to the environment and nature, therefore, its principles are based on respect for the sea and the environment. These values, in my case, were learnt in these surf camps and have really changed the way I see this sport. Remember! Surfing is an exciting and very fun sport that attracts its followers mainly because it’s practiced in attractive places. These places become a paradise used for meditation and relaxation. But you must not forget that you have to be very careful with the undertow of the sea and to locate all the rocks before you go surfing. Surf camps are an innovative model that combines the sport activity with an accommodation that encourages relaxation. In my particular case, I do not think about going surfing without sleeping at a surf camp for all the reasons mentioned above. It is worth noting that although I have gone to many surf camps, the one I had the best experience and good vibes with both monitors and colleagues was in the Lanzarote Surf camp. Here I took my first steps in surfing, and I returned the following year to continue improving my level.
