An area inhabited for thousands of years by natives, hunters, and nomadic collectors.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, <strong> Iquitos is the largest city in the world without road access<\/strong> and this is due, paradoxically, to a material that is currently recycled to make roads.<\/p>\n<p>In this post we tell you how <a title=\"Tours Iquitos Jungle\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howlanders.com\/en\/tours-peru\/iquitos\/iquitos-jungle\">Iquitos, the Amazon jungle<\/a> of Peru, has become the <b>largest city in the world without road access<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h2>The industry in Iquitos<\/h2>\n<p>Iquitos today lives far from the <b>glory achieved between 1880 and 1914 <\/b>, when the <b>rubber industry and exploitation were able to generate wealth, employment, and, therefore, disproportionate population growth.<\/p>\n<p><b>Companies<\/b> like Ford took advantage of the rubber boom to <b>exploit the Amazon Indians<\/b>, who <b>collected and transported the rubber to the docks in Iquitos<\/b>. From there, they <b>left directly to Europe and the United States via the Amazon River<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m12!1m3!1d360327.60715031525!2d-73.34155698722591!3d-3.7894441668766645!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!5e0!3m2!1sen!2ses!4v1610708347808!5m2!1sen!2ses\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" aria-hidden=\"false\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The reports of exploitation of the indigenous population, together with the <b> birth of synthetic rubber, ended three decades of population growth and wealth in Iquitos<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>The enormous <b>fortunes generated from nothing disappeared overnight<\/b> due to circumstances such as the creation of synthetic rubber and the production of rubber latex in more easily exploited plantations in Asia.<\/p>\n<h2>Traces of ephemeral wealth<\/h2>\n<p>After 1912, the <b>production of rubber fell drastically<\/b>, which was joined in consequence by a <b>fall of the city&#8217;s population<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13010\" title=\"Casa de Fierro in Iquitos\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/casa-de-fierro-iquitos.jpg?resize=640%2C310&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"casa de fierro city iquitos\" width=\"640\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/casa-de-fierro-iquitos.jpg?w=825&amp;ssl=1 825w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/casa-de-fierro-iquitos.jpg?resize=768%2C372&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/casa-de-fierro-iquitos.jpg?resize=124%2C60&amp;ssl=1 124w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Iquitos still <b> retains vestiges of the extravagant taste of the rubber barons<\/b>. There are many <a title=\"What to do in Iquitos\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.howlanders.com\/en\/peru\/what-to-do-in-iquitos-city\/\">things to see in Iquitos<\/a> that remind us of this era: <b>the mosaic of tiles in Italian style palaces, the bustling riverfront promenade or the Casa de Fierro<\/b>, a famous residence designed by Gustave Eiffel that was built from sheet metal and carried by hundreds of men through the jungle.<\/p>\n<p>After the fall of rubber, <b>the Peruvian city experienced several &#8216;rebirths&#8217;<\/b> associated with products such as <b>barbasco<\/b>, a biocide for large plantations that died with the emergence of chemical insecticides, or <b>oil<\/b>, which from 1935 <b> allowed the city to maintain some economic momentum<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h2>Transportation through Iquitos, the largest city without road access<\/h2>\n<p>To <b>reach Iquitos with a car you will need five days by boat from the first access road for a vehicle<\/b>. It is flanked by water on one side and thick Amazon rainforest on the other. So the <b>only way to get to Iquitos is to fly there<\/b>. They are the universal means of transportation for those who want to enjoy the <a title=\"Experience in the Jungle of Iquitos\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.howlanders.com\/en\/peru\/experience-iquitos-jungle\/\">experience in Iquitos<\/a> like our partner Javier.
