In fact I dare say it&#8217;s at the top of my &#8220;what to do in Costa Rica&#8221; list. <\/p>\n<p>And I say it was because I was finally able to go to Costa Rica and experience it. So, today I tell you <b>my experience doing the trekking between Drake Bay and San Josecito beach<\/b> with all the details for when you decide to go.<\/p>\n<p>Also, at the end of the article I have left the link to our <b>hike on Wikiloc<\/b>. \ud83d\ude42 I hope it helps you and you enjoy it. Let&#8217;s get started!<\/p>\n<h2>Where is Drake Bay?<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d252470.47441850958!2d-83.66217291938547!3d8.610284979081854!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x8fa38bc75a56f81d%3A0x7673179876d46e08!2sDrake%2C%20Provincia%20de%20Puntarenas%2C%20Costa%20Rica!5e0!3m2!1ses!2ses!4v1623147541401!5m2!1ses!2ses\" width=\"625\" height=\"450\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s get into context: <b>The Osa Peninsula<\/b> is one of the most beautiful and least touristy areas of Costa Rica. It was unknown to me until this trip, and <b>it has completely captivated me<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Within the peninsula, <b>Drake Bay<\/b> is the <b>most famous<\/b> place and almost all of us travelers stayed at the <b>Agujitas de Drake<\/b>. Mind you, people call it Drake Bay or simply Drake.<\/p>\n<h2>Hiking trail from Drake Bay to San Josecito Beach<\/h2>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sunset-drake-bay.jpg?resize=625%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Sunset in Agujitas de Drake\" title=\"Sunset Bay\" width=\"625\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21771\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sunset-drake-bay.jpg?w=625&amp;ssl=1 625w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/sunset-drake-bay.jpg?resize=94%2C60&amp;ssl=1 94w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Drake Bay<\/b> is the place that <b>best represents Costa Rica<\/b>: nature in its purest form and incredible beaches. It&#8217;s where we stayed the most nights and had the best time.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why, among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howlanders.com\/es\/tours-costa-rica\/bahia-drake\" title=\"Tours in Drake Bay\">tours in Drake Bay<\/a> that are worthwhile, I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howlanders.com\/es\/tours-costa-rica\/bahia-drake\/snorkel-isla-del-cano\" title=\"Snorkeling in Ca\u00f1o Island\"> snorkeling in Ca\u00f1o Island<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howlanders.com\/es\/tours-costa-rica\/bahia-drake\/tour-parque-nacional-corcovado\" title=\"Tour Corcovado National Park\">seeing Corcovado National Park<\/a>, depending on the season.<\/p>\n<p>But not only that, there&#8217;s a hiking trail you have to do: the <b>Drake Bay to San Josecito Beach<\/b> route. It&#8217;s a 10-kilometer route along the trail that borders the sea.<\/p>\n<p><center> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/bamboo-hiking-route.jpg?resize=256%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Bamboo hiking route\" title=\"Bamboo\" width=\"256\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/bamboo-hiking-route.jpg?w=256&amp;ssl=1 256w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/bamboo-hiking-route.jpg?resize=38%2C60&amp;ssl=1 38w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I would say that it is suitable for all travelers because <b>it has almost no slope<\/b> and has bridges that make it easy to cross the streams. There is only one conflictive point in the whole route and that is when you have to cross a larger river. But don&#8217;t worry, you just have to take your shoes off and be careful if the water gets too low.<\/p>\n<p>The route is 10 km each way and the key is to walk the outward journey and return in one of the boats used in snorkeling and diving tours. Due to the schedule of the boats, which return at 12:00 <b>the ideal is to start the route early<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h3>Start of the tour<\/h3>\n<p>If you wake up at 7:00 am and leave at 8:00 am from Drake Bay, at the latest <b>by 11:00 you will already be at San Josecito beach<\/b> and you will have more than an hour to enjoy this wonderful beach. In our case, of the 3 hours it took us in total to get there, 2 were spent walking and enjoying the views, the beaches, taking pictures and seeing all the life around us.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/beach-on-drake-bay-hike.jpg?resize=625%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Beach on the Drake Bay- San Josecito route\" title=\"Paradise beach\"  width=\"625\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/beach-on-drake-bay-hike.jpg?w=625&amp;ssl=1 625w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/beach-on-drake-bay-hike.jpg?resize=94%2C60&amp;ssl=1 94w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The hike trail<b>begins on the outskirts of Agujitas de Drake<\/b>. You will have to walk down to the beach and head left. Very soon you will see a trail, which is the beginning of the route and you just have to follow it. To know you&#8217;re going right, you&#8217;ll have to keep seeing signs to &#8220;<b>Playa Cocalito<\/b>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Our experience could not have been better, but keep in mind that we did the route <b>at the beginning of April<\/b>, the end of the dry season. You may find that if you do it in the rainy season, the rivers come down with more water and you may find more mud on the route, more mosquitoes or just more rain.<\/p>\n<h3>What will you see during the hike between Drake Bay and San Josecito beach?<\/h3>\n<p>We had just left Drake Bay and were joined by a dog that accompanied us all the way. After a while we started hearing noises in the trees, it was <b>capuchin monkeys<\/b>! They didn&#8217;t seem very happy with the dog and even came down to stand 3 meters away, incredible. <\/p>\n<p> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/capuchino-route-san-josecito.jpg?resize=625%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Capuchino route Drake Bay - San Josecito\" title=\"capuchino monkey\"  width=\"625\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/capuchino-route-san-josecito.jpg?w=625&amp;ssl=1 625w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/capuchino-route-san-josecito.jpg?resize=94%2C60&amp;ssl=1 94w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We followed the route seeing dream beaches, countless <b>different trees<\/b> and <b>guacamayos<\/b>. In addition, we crossed <b>hanging bridges<\/b>, paths across a creek (river in rainy season) and arrived at San Josecito Beach where we bathed. For me, it&#8217;s one of the best beaches in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p><center> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/drake-bay-hike-tree.jpg?resize=256%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Drake Bay hiking trail tree\" title=\"Giant tree\" width=\"256\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/drake-bay-hike-tree.jpg?w=256&amp;ssl=1 256w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/drake-bay-hike-tree.jpg?resize=38%2C60&amp;ssl=1 38w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/center><\/p>\n<h3>How do you make your way back by boat? <\/h3>\n<p>No need to &#8220;book&#8221; the trip, this is more &#8220;<b>pura vida<\/b>&#8220;. However, I advise you to <b>ask<\/b> at your accommodation or at an agency for the <b>boat schedules<\/b> and make sure you&#8217;ll find one on the beach the next day. <\/p>\n<p>Maybe by the time you go it&#8217;s been a while since I wrote this article, but we had it confirmed that there were <b>boats<\/b> at <b>12 am<\/b>, (but take it easy, this isn&#8217;t Switzerland). As for the price, it was <b>$10 per person<\/b> on all boats.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/boat-drake-bay.jpg?resize=625%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Drake Bay return boat\" title=\"Drake Bay boat\" width=\"625\" height=\"400\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21751\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/boat-drake-bay.jpg?w=625&amp;ssl=1 625w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/boat-drake-bay.jpg?resize=94%2C60&amp;ssl=1 94w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once at San Josecito beach we were told that there was also another one at 4 pm, but we didn&#8217;t want to risk it. When we left the hostel the idea was simple: enjoy the day and if at lunchtime there was no boat, start the way back. It&#8217;s only two hours and it gives a lot of peace of mind to have a plan B. <\/p>\n<h3>What to take on the route? <\/h3>\n<p>You should know that the route runs through the <b>shade of the trees<\/b> most of the time. We are talking about an area with <b>lots of vegetation<\/b>, <b>heat<\/b>, the odd <b>mosquito<\/b> and <b>loose sand<\/b> in dry season. <\/p>\n<p>Walking makes you hungry and the beach even hungrier, plus if you have to opt for plan B it&#8217;s better to do it on a full stomach. Here&#8217;s the list I recommend you take with you to do the route from Drake Bay to San Josecito:<\/p>\n<p>In your backpack:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sunscreen<\/li>\n<li>Insect repellent.<\/li>\n<li>Mobile phone with the wonderful Wikiloc track that we have prepared.<\/li>\n<li>Rain poncho<\/li>\n<li>Towel<\/li>\n<li>Flip-flops<\/li>\n<li>Swimsuit<\/li>\n<li>Food: snacks, fruits, serrano ham sandwich<\/li>\n<li>Lot of water, not a half-liter bottle, lots of water, it&#8217;s hot.<\/li>\n<li>$10 per person to pay for the boat. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clothing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comfortable shoes: if they are hiking shoes better, I don&#8217;t consider necessary Goretex because it is very hot.<\/li>\n<li>High socks: the sand is very loose and ends up inside your socks.<\/li>\n<li>Lightweight clothing: it&#8217;s very hot.
