Here we go!<\/p>\n<h2>Lake Viedma, Argentina<\/h2>\n<p>In the last place of our ranking we have Lake Viedma, with <b>1088 square kilometers<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>This lake is fed by the Viedma glacier and is located in Los Glaciares National Park (about 80 km from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howlanders.com\/en\/tours-argentina\/el-calafate\" title=\"Tours in El Calafate\">El Calafate<\/a>), the heart of the Argentine Patagonia. Surely you already know this place or you have &#8220;heard us talk about it&#8221;, as it is also home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howlanders.com\/en\/tours-argentina\/el-calafate\/minitrekking-perito-moreno\" title=\"Minitrekking Perito Moreno\">Perito Moreno glacier and its famous minitrekking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m8!1m3!1d1112878.1685327075!2d-73.14156078269744!3d-49.61945324954318!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0xbdbc58c63a4414eb%3A0xcd9d2a1c69ffcf2e!2sLago%20Viedma!5e0!3m2!1ses!2ses!4v1623332218813!5m2!1ses!2ses\" width=\"625\" height=\"400\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Lake Argentino, Argentina<\/h2>\n<p>Without moving from Argentina, the next lake on our list is Lake Argentino. This is one of the largest of the Patagonian lakes with a surface area of <b>1415 sq. km.<\/b> and an average depth of 150 meters.<\/p>\n<p>At some points it reaches 500 meters deep, placing it among the <b>20 deepest lakes in the world<\/b>\ud83d\ude31.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the color of its water, it is quite characteristic and is due to the result of the union of glaciers, known as glacial milk.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lake-argentino.jpg?resize=625%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" title=\"Lake Argentino\" alt=\"lake argentino\" width=\"625\" height=\"400\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lake-argentino.jpg?w=625&amp;ssl=1 625w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/lake-argentino.jpg?resize=94%2C60&amp;ssl=1 94w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Laguna de T\u00e9rminos, Mexico<\/h2>\n<p>This case is not actually a lake, nor is it specifically in South America, but we saw it necessary to add it to this list \ud83d\ude05. Located southwest of the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico, this coastal lagoon is <b>2007 sq. km.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It is declared as <b>a flora and fauna protected area<\/b>, as it is an authentic sanctuary for bottlenose dolphins as it is home to the largest concentration of this species in Mexico \ud83d\udc2c.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you are traveling to Mexico and you are interested in tours like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howlanders.com\/en\/tours-mexico\/riviera-maya\/sian-kaan-adventure\" title=\"Sian Ka'an Adventure tour\">Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve<\/a>, think that Laguna de T\u00e9rminos should also be on your list.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m14!1m8!1m3!1d967692.1675736399!2d-91.93704432031247!3d18.661863024414266!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x85f119c3880c9ce1%3A0xd9ed5de888c151c8!2sLaguna%20de%20T%C3%A9rminos!5e0!3m2!1ses!2ses!4v1623332497462!5m2!1ses!2ses\" width=\"625\" height=\"400\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Mer\u00edn Lagoon, Uruguay<\/h2>\n<p>This lagoon is located on the border between Brazil and Uruguay and has an area of <b>3750 sq. km.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Years ago, the water of Laguna Mer\u00edn was fresh with intermittent saltwater intrusion from the lagoon of Los Patos through the San Gonzalo channel. However, in 1977 a sluice was built to prevent this seawater intrusion and thus provide a reserve of drinking water for the surrounding towns and not harm the rice crops. For this reason, <b>the Mer\u00edn lagoon is currently freshwater<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/merin-lagoon-uruguay.jpg?resize=625%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" title=\"Merin lagoon\" alt=\"Merin lagoon in Uruguay\" width=\"625\" height=\"400\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-22219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/merin-lagoon-uruguay.jpg?w=625&amp;ssl=1 625w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.howlanders.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/merin-lagoon-uruguay.jpg?resize=94%2C60&amp;ssl=1 94w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Mar Chiquita, Argentina<\/h2>\n<p>As you can see, Argentina has a large number of amazing lakes, and Patagonia has a lot to offer.<\/p>\n<p>The Mar Chiquita Lagoon or Mar de Ansenuza, located in the northwest of the province of Cordoba, is the largest salt lake on the planet, with <b>7900 sq. km<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>This lake has a depth of 35 feet. What does this mean? Okay, Nicaragua is in Central America, but how could we not tell you about the only lake in the world where <b>there are sharks<\/b> \ud83e\udd88?<\/p>\n<p>It is the largest lake in Central America and the third-largest in Latin America with <b>8264 sq. km<\/b> and has 400 small islands, 3 islands, and 2 volcanoes. It is freshwater and has an <b>area of 13,820 square kilometers<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>It is the second oldest on the planet and is considered by NASA as the <b>lightning capital of the world<\/b>. This is due to the fact that over the southern area of Lake Maracaibo the lightning of Catatumbo takes place, a meteorological phenomenon that produces an average rate of 233 flashes per square kilometer per year.
