Visiting Machu Picchu is already an experience you should have at least once in your life. But if you’re wondering whether it is worth visiting Machu Picchu at sunrise, the answer has a few nuances.

The place is the same, and so is the history, behind it is the same too. But the light, the views, and the feeling of walking through the citadel early in the morning can make the experience feel very different.

That’s why, in this article, we’ll share our opinion on visiting this Wonder of the World so early. We’ll also tell you whether we think it is worth it or not.

If after reading this you decide you want to try it, you can book the Machu Picchu train tour with Howlanders. During the booking process, you can request the earliest available time.

What changes when you see the sunrise at Machu Picchu?

Maybe we are not completely objective here, but sunsets and sunrises always leave us with some of the best memories from our trips. That may be why we believe it is worth seeing the sunrise at Machu Picchu.

The first thing that changes compared to visiting later in the day is the light. It is important to keep in mind that, in most cases, you will not see the sun rise exactly from inside the citadel, as access depends on the available entry time and transportation logistics. However, if you book the Machu Picchu train tour, you can request the earliest available time to try to see the first rays of sunlight illuminating Huayna Picchu and the mountains surrounding the citadel.

At 7,972 feet (2,430 meters) above sea level, the ruins of Machu Picchu offer incredible views of the mountain landscape and the Sacred Valley. That said, and we will be completely honest: at this altitude, clouds are very common and may not always let you see the sky as clearly as you would like.

That is why, even if you are unlucky and the morning is cloudy, there is still another reason why visiting Machu Picchu at sunrise is worth it. This is one of the most visited destinations in the world, so making the effort to wake up early and arrive before most other travelers allows you to experience the famous ruins with fewer crowds.

When does the sunrise in Machu Picchu?

In Machu Picchu dawn breaks between 5:15 and 6:15 in the morning. It all depends on the season of the year in which you are, of course. The first shift to visit the site is at 7:00 am, so we said that most likely you will not see the sunrise, but you will see the play of light of the first rays of sunlight.

If your goal is to visit Machu Picchu as early as possible, the most important thing is to book an early entry time and coordinate the train, bus, and guide correctly. With Howlanders’ Machu Picchu train tour, you can request the earliest available time during the booking process to try to enjoy the citadel with fewer people and the special light of early morning.

Where to see from?

The best place to see the sunrise of Machu Picchu is at the Sun Gate. Also called Intipunku, this place gives you a great view over the urban area of Machu Picchu. Once you arrive, the sky will clear and let the sun’s rays slowly illuminate the area. it’s magical!

You can walk up to this point freely and you don’t need to buy another ticket to enjoy the view from there.

Best Time of Year to Visit

Traveling to Machu Picchu is pleasant at any time of year because temperatures are usually mild. The rainy season runs from December to March, with some rainy days also possible in April.

You can try to see the sunrise at any time of year, but we recommend doing it between May and November. This is the dry season, with more daylight hours and generally better weather.

We would avoid February, if possible, as the rains are usually stronger and, for example, the Inca Trail closes during that month. No matter when you go, bring a warm layer to see the sunrise at Machu Picchu, as it can be chilly early in the morning.

So, Is It Worth Seeing the Sunrise at Machu Picchu?

Yes, it is worth trying to visit Machu Picchu first thing in the morning. Although you will not always see the sun rise directly, the morning light, fewer crowds, and the feeling of starting the day inside the citadel make the early wake-up call worth it.

If you want to enjoy this experience without worrying about coordinating trains, buses, tickets, and schedules, book your Machu Picchu tour with Howlanders. When booking, you can request the earliest available time to try to enjoy the first rays of sunlight over Machu Picchu.

Lily is happy with a backpack on her back. Every year she travels through one country in Latin America and has repeated several times, especially Peru where she says she feels at home (although she says the same about Argentina, Chile and Bolivia). She loves ceviche, hiking and Sunday picnics with her friends, although whenever you ask her, she's always planning her next destination.

  1. Hi Lily, My name is Dan and I have a small travel agency in Colorado. I’m putting togehter a hosted tour of Machu Picchu and Lima for April 2023 and see that you are a great resource for South American information. My wife, Collette, and I will be touring around South America ahead of the group arriving in Lima. I have been working with a group named Go Latin America Club and Peru Tourism on an itinerary for our trip. Where I’m having a problem is with how to see Machu Picchu; at sunrise and use up 2hrs of our 3hr limit, or spend the full 3hrs in the citadel. I could really use your experience and recommendation here.
    Thanks for your help.
    Cheers,
    Dan

    1. Hi Dan! To be honest, Machu Picchu at dawn is usually very cloudy and it is likely that you will not enjoy the play of light at dawn. As we say in the post, the good thing about entering first thing in the morning is that it is usually less crowded.

However, these last months of 2022 Machu Picchu has been booming and has been filled with people at any time. Therefore, if you have more time, my recommendation is to enjoy the Citadel because it will be the same as entering first thing in the morning but quieter. If you have the opportunity, I recommend you to do the 2 day tour of Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley, it is the most complete. I leave you here the link: https://www.howlanders.com/en/tours-peru/cusco/sacred-valley-machu-picchu

I hope I helped you! Thanks for reading
